What began as a fascination with the many faces of caladium has evolved into a series – an exploration of leaf patterns, shadows and layers seen in nature. The first layer, the caladium, presented many challenges. To capture the personality of that particular species, I used fusing, threadwork, machine appliqué and embroidery, and fabric markers. The creation for the final layers came from concealing the caladium foundation by obscuring it with another plant as nature so often does. Choosing a small size format freed me to focus on the surface design; using sheer fabrics added mystery, and opened up new possibilities in my work. This series has been a joyful, liberating, creative experience that I intend to continue to explore.
